Bruce Mitchell
Bruce Mitchell has dedicated over five decades to the craft of woodworking. His expertise in lathe-turned vessels showcases the intricate beauty and skill that can be achieved with wood. Each piece he creates, from sculptures to thoughtfully designed benches, reflects a deep understanding of both form and function.
Mitchell’s work transcends traditional woodworking, embracing abstract forms that invite viewers to engage with the material in new and thoughtful ways. His commitment to quality and artistry sets a benchmark for woodworkers and designers alike, inspiring a renewed appreciation for the natural beauty of sustainably sourced wood.
As Bruce’s early lathe work evolved from the austere, classic shapes of Asian ceramics into more spontaneous, one of a kind sculptural vessels, he began to expand upon the carving techniques he learned from his mentor J.B. Blunk in developing pure abstract forms from tabletop to monumental in scale.
In 1969, Bruce was positioned at the onset of his career when he had the opportunity to assist J.B. Blunk with a commission for the Oakland Museum of Modern Art. This project, titled the PLANET, involved a collaboration that would set the stage for Bruce's future endeavors in the art and design space. In addition to books and catalogs, his work can be found in numerous museums and private collections throughout the United States.
